Winter Weather Advisory
...A MIXTURE OF FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET TO OVERSPREAD AREAS NORTH OF
I-66/U.S. 50 ON FRIDAY...
.As high pressure builds across Quebec, a steady stream of cold air
will funnel southward into the Mid-Atlantic region. At the same
time, moisture will overrrun a frontal boundary across the central
Appalachians down into the Carolinas. As milder air will settle
above the sub-freezing surface layer, a wintry mix consisting of
freezing rain and sleet is likely over portions of the area. Travel
impacts are likely where the wintry mix falls.
* WHAT...Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet
accumulations up to one inch and ice accumulations around one
tenth of an inch, with closer to a trace to a few hundredths of an
inch to the south of I-70.
* WHERE...Portions of central, north central, and northern Maryland
and northern Virginia.
* WHEN...From noon Friday to midnight EST Friday Night.
* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous
conditions could impact the Friday evening commute.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Precipitation is likely to overspread the
area by midday Friday in the form of sleet or freezing rain.
Freezing rain with some sleet mixing in will continue through the
afternoon and evening. A bit more sleet can be expected closer to
the Maryland-Pennsylvania border. Through the day, temperatures
are expected to remain close to 32 degrees. Precipitation exits
off to the northeast with some light drizzle or freezing drizzle
possibly lingering into the early overnight hours.

Special Weather Statement
Wind chill values will dip between 5 below zero and 5 above zero
across much of Maryland, northern Virginia, eastern West
Virginia, and Washington DC this evening. Ridges above 1500 feet
elevation may have wind chill values around 10 below zero. With
this being the coldest conditions so far this season, residents
venturing outside are reminded to wear a thick coat, hat, and
gloves to prevent hypothermia. Make sure animals have a warm, dry
shelter with unfrozen water. Winds will begin to slacken the
second half of the night, but air temperatures will still be in
the teens.
In addition, the cold temperatures will result in any residual
snow and water (in areas which saw snow earlier in the day) to
freeze on untreated roads and sidewalks. Slow down and use caution
when driving, as areas which appear wet could be icy. If you are
walking outside, watch your steps on sidewalks, driveways and
parking lots. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing
your risk of a fall and injury.

Winter Weather Advisory
...FIRST WIDESPREAD WINTER EVENT OF THE SEASON...
.Precipitation is expected to overspread the area after midnight
tonight from southwest to northeast. While precipitation is likely
to start as snow areawide, it is expected to mix with and change to
sleet and freezing rain for most of the area. Locations along and
south of US-50/I-66 likely end the event as rain as temperatures
warm through the morning. Areas along the Mason-Dixon are most
likely to remain all snow through the event, but that remains
uncertain given exact low track. The Tuesday morning commute could
be impacted for all areas in the Winter Weather Advisory. Updates to
the forecast are likely, so please remain weather aware for the
first widespread winter event of the season.
* WHAT...Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet
accumulations of 1 to 2 inches, with locally higher amounts
upwards of 4 inches possible near the Mason-Dixon and higher
elevations such as Parr's Ridge. Ice accumulations around up to
one tenth of an inch.
* WHERE...Portions of north central and northern Maryland and
panhandle West Virginia.
* WHEN...From 3 AM to 1 PM EST Tuesday.
* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous
conditions could impact the Tuesday morning commute.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Precipitation is expected to overspread the
area after after midnight tonight. Precipitation is expected to
start as snow before mixing with sleet and freezing rain. Should
precipitation stay all snow or snow for a longer period of time,
locally higher snowfall
amounts would be possible.

Special Weather Statement
The combination of 10-hour fuel moistures around 7 or 8 percent,
relative humidities around 15 to 30 percent, and wind gusts
around 20 to 30 mph will lead to an increased risk for the rapid
spread of wildfires today.
This follows a night of poor relative humidity recoveries over the
higher terrain, in spite of high temperatures only in the low 50s.
Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette
butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate
containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any
equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry
grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could
easily ignite and spread fire quickly.
Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about
wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and
education, please visit your state forestry or environmental
protection website.

Special Weather Statement
The combination of 10-hour fuel moistures around 7 to 9 percent,
relative humidities around 15 to 25 percent (except 30 to 35
percent for much of Maryland), and wind gusts around 20 to 30 mph
(locally up to 40 mph for northern/higher elevation areas) will
lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires today.
This follows a night of poor relative humidity recoveries, despite
high temperatures only reaching into the lower 50s.
The most favorable overlap of dry fuel moisture, lowest relative
humidity, and highest wind gusts is expected over eastern West
Virginia into northern Virginia. To the south, winds will be
lighter, but humidity will be lower. To the north and west, winds
will be higher, but humidity will also be relatively higher.
Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette
butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate
containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any
equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry

Special Weather Statement
There is an elevated risk for fire spread today for the eastern
shore of Maryland. Minimum relative humidity values will fall
into the 30 to 35 percent range early this afternoon. This will
be accompanied by cool and dry northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph
with 30 to 35 mph gusts. These conditions, along with the
continued drying of fine fuels, could support the rapid spread of
any fires that ignite, which could quickly become difficult to
control. Relative humidities will begin to increase towards
evening and winds will decrease after sunset.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Be sure to properly
extinguish or dispose of any potential ignition sources, including
smoking materials such as cigarette butts.
This forecast considers meteorological, fuel, and land conditions
and has been developed in coordination with state fire officials.

minimum relative humidities around 30 to 35 percent, and
northwesterly wind gusts around 40 to 50 mph will lead to an

Temperatures will reach the middle 50s around midday before
dropping. Poor RH recoveries are expected tonight, especially over
the higher elevations.
Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette
butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate
