Hydrologic Outlook
ESFGRR
Steady melting of snow and ice over the last week has begun to cause
rivers to rise across the area. Several chances for rain this week
will add to these rises. Based on current expected rainfall, no
significant flooding is expected on West Michigan rivers, though
typical spring water level rises within the river channels will
happen.
Meanwhile, river ice has weakened significantly over the last week,
and as water levels rise any remaining ice will likely be broken and
start to move downstream. This creates the possibility for formation
of a few ice jams. Ice jams tend to form in the same places
repeatedly, so special attention should be paid in the Comstock Park
(Kent County) area as well as the Robinson Township (Ottawa County)
area along the Grand River.
Anyone living or working near West Michigan rivers should pay extra
attention this week as water levels rise. Have a plan to monitor and
respond if flooding develops unexpectedly.

Special Weather Statement
Occasional light snow will move through Southwest Lower Michigan this
morning. 3 to 5 hours of snow will occur at any one location.
Snowfall will range from trace amounts to possibly an inch or two
towards Lake Michigan. In the wake of the heavier snow a period of
freezing drizzle may occur, especially from mid morning through early
afternoon.
The main impact will be slowed travel this morning. Slick conditions will
develop due to the snowfall. Allow some extra travel time this
morning to reach your destination.

Special Weather Statement
An area of light snowfall will move through southeast Michigan
this morning. Snowfall amounts will range from a trace up to a
half inch. The cold temperatures will allow for a quick
accumulation on roadways resulting in slick spots and any brief
heavier snow shower may lead to a reduction in visibility. Drivers
are urged to use caution and account for variable driving
conditions as snowfall moves through this morning.

Hydrologic Outlook
ESFGRR
Bitterly cold temperatures moving into Michigan over the next few
days will increase the risk of ice jams on rivers. While many
locations have already frozen over, ongoing ice growth will continue
to increase in any open water areas.
These temperatures have not been seen for many years in West
Michigan, which means that some areas that don't typically
experience river ice jams may have issues this year. Ice jams can
result in water levels rising much more quickly than usual, which
can catch people off guard. Anyone living or working near rivers in
West Michigan should prepare now for potential river ice and rising
water levels.
While temperatures warm up a bit early next week, this overall cold
weather pattern will continue through at least next week, which will
keep ice locked in place on the rivers.
You can always find the latest river level information at water.noaa.
