Special Weather Statement
The combination of 10-hour fuel moistures around 7 to 9 percent,
relative humidities around 15 to 25 percent (except 30 to 35
percent for much of Maryland), and wind gusts around 20 to 30 mph
(locally up to 40 mph for northern/higher elevation areas) will
lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires today.
This follows a night of poor relative humidity recoveries, despite
high temperatures only reaching into the lower 50s.
The most favorable overlap of dry fuel moisture, lowest relative
humidity, and highest wind gusts is expected over eastern West
Virginia into northern Virginia. To the south, winds will be
lighter, but humidity will be lower. To the north and west, winds
will be higher, but humidity will also be relatively higher.
Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette
butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate
containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any
equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry
grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could
easily ignite and spread fire quickly.
Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about
wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and
education, please visit your state forestry or environmental
protection website.

Special Weather Statement
There is an elevated risk for fire spread today for the eastern
shore of Maryland. Minimum relative humidity values will fall
into the 30 to 35 percent range early this afternoon. This will
be accompanied by cool and dry northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph
with 30 to 35 mph gusts. These conditions, along with the
continued drying of fine fuels, could support the rapid spread of
any fires that ignite, which could quickly become difficult to
control. Relative humidities will begin to increase towards
evening and winds will decrease after sunset.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Be sure to properly
extinguish or dispose of any potential ignition sources, including
smoking materials such as cigarette butts.
This forecast considers meteorological, fuel, and land conditions
and has been developed in coordination with state fire officials.

The combination of 10-hour fuel moistures around 8 to 10 percent,

Special Weather Statement
As a cold front sweeps across the area this evening, a surge of
strong west-northwest winds will follow. The strongest gusts,
potentially reaching 40 to 50 mph in spots, will generally last an
hour or less at any given location. Even so, gusts of this
magnitude are capable of blowing around lightweight objects,
causing localized minor tree damage and power outages, and
creating difficult driving conditions for high profile vehicles.
The strong wind gusts will reach...
The northern Shenandoah Valley and northern Maryland through 1000
PM...
The Baltimore and Washington metropolitan areas between 930 PM
and 1100 PM...
Southern Maryland between 1030 PM and 1230 AM.

Special Weather Statement
The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures around 10 percent,
relative humidities around 25 to 30 percent, wind gusts around 20-30
mph, and high temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s will lead to
an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires on Wednesday.
This will be preceded by a night of very poor recoveries, which will
enhance dry conditions across the area, especially in the higher
elevations.
