A band of heavy snow will move across far northeast Illinois,
including Lake County and portions of McHenry and northern Cook
Counties. Conditions will quickly deteriorate as the band moves
through, reducing visibility to one half mile or less and
producing a quick coating of snow up to half an inch.
Motorists should be prepared to encounter localized hazardous
travel conditions. Take it slow and keep a safe following
distance when on snow covered roads and during periods of poor
visibility.

Special Weather Statement
A strong Arctic front will move across the area this evening,
accompanied by scattered to numerous snow showers. The most
intense snow showers and localized snow squalls may briefly reduce
visibility under one half mile at times and produce a quick half
inch to locally one inch of snow accumulation. Westerly winds will
gust as high as 40 mph, which may produce blowing snow and shallow
drifting snow, especially on north to south roads in open, exposed
areas.
Motorists should be prepared to potentially encounter localized
hazardous travel conditions this evening. Before driving, pay
close attention to weather conditions and check updated road
conditions. Take it slow and keep a safe following distance when
on snow covered roads and during periods of poor visibility.

Hydrologic Outlook
ESFLOT
Waves of showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and
evening across portions of northeastern Illinois and northwestern
Indiana. The highest rainfall rates are expected this evening as
atmospheric moisture increases to near record levels for January and
a line of showers and thunderstorms moves through the area. Small
isolated corridors may receive rainfall in excess of 1-2 inches,
especially in areas where storms orient in a more southwest to
northeast direction. Rainfall amounts of this magnitude sometimes
cause localized flooding of streams and poor drainage areas during
the winter months. Areas with streets, drainage ditches, and
stormwater drains impacted by late fall and early winter vegetation
debris may be especially susceptible to flooding.
This outlook means that elevated water levels and potential impacts
are possible, but not yet certain, based upon the latest forecasts.
Persons with interests along area streams and rivers should closely
monitor the latest forecasts. In addition, ensure that nearby
stormwater drains and ditches are cleared of debris.
