* WHAT...Very cold wind chills as low as 15 to 25 below. * WHERE...Kodiak Island, and Tyonek. * WHEN...Until noon AKST Thursday. * IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 20 minutes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The combination of gusty winds and cold temperatures falling to between zero and ten above will result in wind chill values overnight and into Thursday morning of between 15 to 25 below zero. Winds will slowly diminish Thursday as temperatures climb back into the teens.

Special Weather Statement

Strong northwesterly winds gusting as high as 50 mph are currently resuspending ash from the 1912 Katmai-Novarupta eruption across Southwest Kodiak Island, causing haze and trace amounts of ash accumulation. Communities most likely to be impacted include Karluk and Larsen Bay. People in sensitive groups or with respiratory ailments are encouraged to stay indoors and reduce outdoor activity to avoid inhaling the ash. Winds are expected to slowly diminish Thursday morning, which should cause ash to settle out of the atmosphere.

Wind chills dropping as low as 15 below zero Wednesday morning. * WHERE...Northeast end of Kodiak Island, including Kodiak City. * WHEN...From 3 AM to 9 PM AKST Wednesday. * IMPACTS...High winds could move loose debris, damage property, and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult. Wind chills as low as 15 below zero could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The pattern remains very similar to last Thursday night when Kodiak City observed high winds, with cold Arctic air surging across Kodiak Island Tuesday night through Wednesday. While there is a subtle difference in the upper levels, with a disturbance passing just north of the island instead of passing overhead, wind gusts as high as 75 mph are forecast. The strongest winds are expected Wednesday morning, but elevated gusts will likely persist into Wednesday evening before diminishing late Wednesday night.
