Yellow ice warning

Information on update: The start time has been brought forward to Tuesday evening to cover the risk of ice beginning earlier across Scotland and northern England, though noting that this risk emerges progressively later in the night further southeast across the warning area. Following a band of precipitation which clears southeast overnight, clear skies will develop for many areas on Tuesday night, leading to icy patches on untreated wet surfaces. Yellow rain warning

Information on update: Updated matrix position, validity times and text. Outbreaks of rain will spread in from the west during Saturday evening, persist through Sunday before eventually clearing away during Monday afternoon and evening. The rain will be heavy at times with accumulations of 50-70 mm developing quite widely across the warning area and over 100 mm across high ground. Totals will be highest across Cumbria, where over 200 mm could accumulate in places during this 48 hour period. Strong southwesterly winds are also possible at times. Outbreaks of rain will become persistent and heavy on Tuesday morning, before clearing into the afternoon. Accumulations of 20-40 mm are likely over some hills, with up to 80 mm possible over high ground in Cumbria. Given the saturated nature of the ground, this is likely to lead to some flooding in places and transport disruption. Rain will also be accompanied by strengthening south to southwesterly winds, with gusts in excess of 60 mph possible over high ground, which may exacerbate impacts, especially on routes across the Pennines. An area of heavy rain will move steadily east across the area during Monday. Whilst the rain may ease for a time during the afternoon across Cumbria, another pulse of heavy rain is possible here during the evening and overnight, with all rain eventually clearing early Tuesday morning. 20-40 mm of rain is likely to fall quite widely across the warning area, but higher ground could see 50-80 mm, with perhaps nearer 100-120 mm in a few places over the Cumbrian fells. Strong south to southwesterly winds will also accompany the heavy rain, with gales possible around coasts and over high ground. Outbreaks of rain will spread southwards on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, potentially falling as snow on hills for a time, before clearing to the south. As skies clear later, allowing temperatures to fall close to or below freezing, this will bring the risk of icy patches on untreated surfaces. Some temporary slushy snow deposits will be possible where snow persists for long enough, especially on grassy surfaces, but any significant accumulations will be largely restricted to communities and transport routes above about 300 m elevation. Yellow rain warning

Rainfall will spread northeastwards on Saturday, and become persistent and at times heavy. Through this period 20-40 mm of rain is expected to fall widely, with some locations perhaps seeing 75-100 mm, with much of this total falling in the later hours of the event. From mid-Saturday onwards, increasingly strong gusty winds and perhaps some thunder will also accompany the rainfall, further increasing the risk of disruption. By the early hours of Sunday, persistent heavy rain will have likely cleared from Wales, with this rain easing for Northern England and Scotland by dawn on Sunday morning. Information on update: Warning updated to a higher likelihood of lower impacts and extended over a larger area of England and Wales. Strong west or southwesterly winds will arrive across coastal areas of southwest England and Wales during Sunday evening, then develop more widely inland during Monday morning. Gusts of 45-55 mph are expected widely inland, with gusts of 60-70 mph possible at times along exposed coasts and hills. Yellow thunderstorm warning

Bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to move northeast across parts of England and Wales on Thursday. As showers progress northeastward they will become temporarily slow moving, leading to an increased chance of surface water flooding. Whilst the vast majority of places will have either non-impactful rain or remain dry, a few places within this area could see 30-60mm in an hour.
