Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. The combination of afternoon RH values around 30 to 40 percent and a southwesterly flow increasing to 20 to 25 mph gusts will result in an elevated risk of fire spread. Use caution when handling any potential ignition sources, including machinery, cigarettes and matches. Any fires that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly. The forecast considers meteorological, fuel and land conditions and has been developed in coordination with state fire and land management officials.

Lightening winds and clearing skies are allowing temperatures to drop quickly this morning. Much of the area will likely see temperatures below freezing by sunrise if not already. These freezing temperatures combined with overnight precipitation and snowmelt have already caused areas of black ice. Black ice is expected to become more widespread by sunrise. Use caution if traveling this morning as black ice can make conditions very slick and potentially hazardous. Leave extra room between you and the car in front of you. Additionally, pedestrians should use caution walking on any untreated surfaces.

With temperatures below freezing across the region any snowmelt that occurred during the day will refreeze, especially on untreated surfaces, resulting in black ice. Then a period of light snow is likely by late tonight into the Wednesday morning commute, 400 AM to 1000 AM EST. This light snow, 1 to 2 inches, falling on top of the black ice could make for treacherous travel. Rain may also mix in with the snow along the coast early Wednesday morning. Motorists should be prepared for the possibility of a period of snow covered roads during the morning commute. Temperatures will be rising above freezing during the morning from south to north.

Vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely become flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays. Ice cover in the bays and harbors could exacerbate flooding and cause damage to northeast to east facing shoreline structure. * SHORELINE IMPACTS...Breaking surf of 3 to 5 ft along north and east facing shorelines will cause beach flooding and dune erosion during the time of high tide. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Fine Particulates. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease.
