Very saturated soils will maintain increased risk for potential landslides and debris flows off of burn scars. - Http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
Special Weather Statement
Significant rainfall over the past week has increased soil moisture to high levels across western Washington. Additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected through Friday. This amount of rain will continue to put extra pressure on soil instability, leading to an increased threat of landslides and debris flows, especially from recent burned areas, with this new rainfall acting as a trigger. Numerous landslides have already occurred in Whatcom, Skagit, King Counties and others. More landslides continue to be possible. Areas most susceptible to landslides debris flows under these conditions are steep coastal bluffs, other steep hillsides or road cuts, and recent burned areas. A diminishing threat of landslides and debris flows will continue for several days after the rain ends. For more information about current conditions, visit www.weather.gov/seattle, select Hydrology, and then scroll down for the links to the landslide information pages. Special Weather Statement
Rainfall from the past week has increased soil moisture to high levels across western Washington. Additional rainfall of around 2-6 inches is expected early this week. This amount of rain will put extra pressure on soil instability, leading to an increased threat of landslides and debris flows, especially from recent burned areas. This rain event could act as a trigger for new landslides.
Rainfall of 2 to 12 inches over the past several days has increased soil moisture to very high levels across western Washington. This amount of rain will put extra pressure on soil instability, leading to an increased threat of landslides and debris flows, especially from recent burned areas. Numerous landslides have already been reported in the western Cascades in western Washington. More landslides are possible. Hydrologic Outlook
ESFSEW A stronger and longer lasting weather system moving into Western Washington today will support continued precipitation through Thursday. The forecast storm total precipitation is 2 1/2 to 4 inches for the Olympics but there remains uncertainty among forecast models. Snow levels will rise to 5500 to 6500 feet by late Wednesday meaning the precipitation will fall as rain. Soil moisture is at normal mid winter saturation levels as well. All of this points to the potential for flooding on the Skokomish River in Mason County by early Thursday. Current river forecasts indicate a crest on the Skokomish right around flood stage. Please monitor the latest river forecasts from the National Weather Service for additional information.
Hydrologic Outlook
ESFSEW The bulk of the rainfall concentrated on areas south of the Skokomish River basin so the chance of the river cresting much higher than forecast is very low. Another batch of rain overnight will result in cresting higher than it is, but it is not expected to exceed flood stage. Please monitor the latest river forecasts from the National Weather Service for additional information.
Hydrologic Outlook
ESFSEW A series of progressive systems will bring rain to western Washington through the weekend. The heaviest rainfall is expected through Saturday, with rainfall amounts over the Olympic Peninsula ranging between 2-3 inches. This will lead to rises on the Skokomish River in Mason County. With the Skokomish River running high and with snow levels expected to be between 5500-7500 feet, expect sharper rises on the river late Friday into Saturday. Flooding will be possible into the weekend. Please monitor the latest river forecasts from the National Weather Service for additional information.
Hydrologic Outlook
ESFSEW A series of progressive systems moving across the region into the weekend will bring roughly 2-3 inches of rain to the Olympics and will force steady rises on Skokomish River in Mason County. With the Skokomish River running high and with snow levels expected to be between 5500-7500 feet, expect sharper rises on the river this evening and again on Saturday. Flooding will be possible into the weekend. Please monitor the latest river forecasts from the National Weather Service for additional information.
