Special Weather Statement
The combination of 10-hour fuel moistures around 7 to 9 percent,
relative humidities around 15 to 25 percent (except 30 to 35
percent for much of Maryland), and wind gusts around 20 to 30 mph
(locally up to 40 mph for northern/higher elevation areas) will
lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires today.
This follows a night of poor relative humidity recoveries, despite
high temperatures only reaching into the lower 50s.
The most favorable overlap of dry fuel moisture, lowest relative
humidity, and highest wind gusts is expected over eastern West
Virginia into northern Virginia. To the south, winds will be
lighter, but humidity will be lower. To the north and west, winds
will be higher, but humidity will also be relatively higher.
Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette
butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate
containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any
equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry
grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could
easily ignite and spread fire quickly.
Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about
wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and
education, please visit your state forestry or environmental
protection website.

Special Weather Statement
The combination of dry and windy conditions this afternoon into
this evening will create an elevated risk of wildfire spread
across the Central Ridge and Valley Region of Pennsylvania, along
with the Middle and Lower Susquehanna Valley.
Minimum relative humidity values this afternoon will range from
35 to 45 percent, accompanied by wind gusts from the southwest to
west that will top 45 mph at times.
Residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential
ignition sources, such as machinery, cigarettes, or matches.
If dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have
the potential to spread rapidly.
For more information about wildfire danger and wildfire
prevention and education, please visit the Pennsylvania Department
of Conservation and Natural Resources website at
